Opera North — Julia Holter: The Passion of Joan of Arc

Opera North
Scope of work
  • Design
  • Art Direction

Opera North is a national, award-winning opera company based in Leeds and the North of England. In collaboration with the Barbican and Brudenell Social Club, Opera North produced a new score for The Passion Of Joan Of Arc; featuring American singer-songwriter Julia Holter and the Opera North Chorus.

Our task was to art-direct and design a visual identity and poster for the world premiere. In the 1928 silent film, Renee Maria Falconetti gives a performance for the ages, leading American film critic Pauline Kael to remark—“It may be the finest performance ever recorded on film”. Our design direction was inspired by Roger Ebert’s 1997 review, in which he writes: “In a medium without words, where the filmmakers believed that the camera captured the essence of characters through their faces, to see Falconetti in “The Passion of Joan of Arc” is to look into eyes that will never leave you.”
