The Coldplay Timeline is a comprehensive digital archive spanning over 20 years of the band's history. With over 34,000 submitted memories from fans from every corner of the globe, it is a unique insight into the story of one of the world’s biggest bands.
The Coldplay Timeline is a living history of the band from their very first rehearsal through to the present day. It contains exclusive behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, handwritten notes, and rare photography from the band.
The visual language for the website needed to carve out its own identity, whilst still feeling quintessentially Coldplay. We developed a new visual identity using animated butterflies, bright colour gradients, and a new serif typeface (Mrs Eaves). These were subtle motifs that fans could recognise from the band’s past album artworks.
The exclusive content on the site can be explored chronologically via eras (albums). Every show that the band has ever performed has been plotted on an interactive map, from their first gig at the Camden Falcon in 1998, to the huge A Head Full Of Dreams world tours of 2015–2017.
During the AHFOD world tour, the Timeline became the perfect platform to document the 122 scheduled shows. By aggregating video, photography, and commentary submitted by both the band and the fans, the Timeline was able to digitally capture the excitement, atmosphere, and story of every show.
One of the most remarkable features of the Coldplay Timeline is the way in which fans are able to contribute to the on-going documentation of the band’s journey. To date over 34,000 fan photos and memories have been submitted, from every corner of the world. It’s this ongoing dialogue between the band and the fans that has made the Timeline story so incredibly insightful.
Few bands have managed to chart such a long career in so much detail online. 20 years on from when the band first formed in Camden, London, it’s become a vital resource for the fans to follow the story of how it all came to be. You can explore the timeline and submit a fan memory at timeline.coldplay.com.
“Rabbit Hole added incredible level of skill and artistry into the Coldplay Timeline. It’s become a living, breathing resource for telling the story of the band and a testament to our incredible fans.” Phil Harvey, Creative Director at Coldplay
In 2019, the Coldplay Timeline won a Webby Award for best music website.
