Studio Egret West (SEW) are a mix of urban designers, architects, and landscape architects. The studio see themselves primarily as storytellers, using narrative to design and curate memorable places that cultivate sustainable communities, amplify nature, and prioritise the public realm.
SEW are an antithesis to monoculture. When we met them there was already an eclectic and vibrant visual language being employed by the Studio’s graphic design team, however, they required a robust identity system to stitch it all coherently together into one recognisable brand.
We wanted the identity to be able to sing their diverse and pluralist visual language. So we began designing frames and containers that could act as windows into the eclectic, visual world of SEW. These containers eventually took on the boundary shapes of some of the places and frameworks SEW had previously realised.
Bringing the Studio of Studio Egret West to the forefront was a big part of the strategy and visual identity.
The SEW brand marque gives visual prominence to the S of Studio, the E/W initials, taken from the founding partners Christophe Egret and David West, are combined in an abstract ligature that represents a cross disciplinary approach to place making. This core ethos has expanded the Studio from the founding principles of mixing architecture with urban design – to now include a huge array of talent across a multitude of disciplines; including landscape architecture, model-making, graphic design, and film-making.
Through a series of workshops we collaborated with the SEW team to develop a new brand strategy and messaging system that outlined their core values, studio ethos, and processes. We then used this messaging to create a dynamic brand video.
The branding process culminated in the design and build of a new website. The site was split into four sections: People, Places, Propositions, and Process. The Places section shows engaging visual narratives of the strategy, craft, and on-going sustainability and habitation of each place.
The Propositions section amplifies the thought leading and philosophical side to the studio. With studio members expounding perspectives, opinions, and personal obsessions on everything from place making to art, urban living, and architecture.
“Rabbit Hole brought a huge amount of creativity and intelligence to every stage of the process. ” Christophe Egret, Founding Director at SEW
The new brand was launched with a party and a multimedia exhibition in the SEW Showroom.
Over the past 15 years Studio Egret West have designed and curated remarkable places across the UK, often by giving them second lives. These places include Park Hill in Sheffield, The Old Vinyl Factory in Hayes, London, and Mayfield, Manchester.
The new brand and website proudly launches the next era in the SEW story. As the studio turns to an even more global outlook, we look forward to our continued collaboration as they write the next chapter.
